Secondary School Options
March 2009
The April 10th deadline for boarding school commitments is quickly approaching....but that doesn't necessarily mean the end of the process until next fall.
For those families who are thinking about independent school, beginning in September, it is not too late to visit, interview and apply to many fine schools. Either due to unforeseen circumstances, or intentionally, many schools will have spaces available for September '09.
If you are a family who made the January application deadlines and find yourself on the waitlist or rejected from your top schools, there are strategies to increase your chances of attaining a spot for your child in the fall.
Every spring, as the school year comes to an end, we hear from many middle school and high school families that their child's school is not filling his or her needs or the local high school (for middle school families) will not be a proper "fit" for their student. We, at Dunbar, are committed to listening to your concerns and then finding an alternative solution, whether that's staying at home or finding an appropriate boarding school.
For many families, boarding schools provide the small class sizes, smaller student to faculty ratios and flexibility in providing individualized attention that they seek for their children. Faculty members are able to take advantage of teachable moments in the classroom, in the dormitory and at every athletic venue. For other families, a local independent school can meet many of those needs while the child continues to live at home.
Call us if you are looking for boarding or day schools for your child OR if you would like to receive a second opinion on options you have already explored .
