College application deadlines are on the horizon, and our seniors should tell their school counselors which colleges are their top choices for admission. Also, be sure to tell the college itself, and mention that you've informed your school counselor. Why is this important? In the era of the Common Application, colleges are increasingly challenged to determine which applicants are the most interested in their schools. By admitting the students who are serious about attending, a college can boost its "yield", which is the number of admitted students who choose to attend that college. This number is part of many college ranking publications, and it is seen as a measure of a college's desirability. The yield can even affect the interest rate at which colleges are allowed to borrow money! No one wants to be turned down when they ask someone out on a date. In other words, let your top choice college know how popular they are with you! |
